The Melburnian

by Rebecca Jansma Interior Design

“Enviably located opposite the gardens and War Memorial in St Kilda Rd, Melbourne, this three bedroom apartment in the iconic tower of The Melburnian complex was well due for a refresh after 20 years. Being a weekend city escape for our clients, the brief was that the apartment feel like walking into a luxury European six-star venue.

We had the luxury of free rein and completely gutted the existing fixtures and finishes, in order to overlay the more classical elements required. The addition of wainscoting and brass mesh to create a more intimate nook for gathering and listening to music was enhanced by the use of the ever so beautiful Horsehair Roan grass cloth wallpaper by Phillip Jeffries in the softest of blues. Being the only space in the open plan kitchen/living/dining space allowed us to define the music nook and create a beautiful, soft and textured ambience.”

“The choice of Phillip Jeffries-1944-Glam Grass-Refined Gold was the perfect choice for the entry foyer. It created a sense of richness and luxury to an area that is transitory, an opportunity to create a moment of pause as the threshold to the livelier living spaces.

It’s sophisticated and dramatic, melding the original traditional home with the more contemporary extension.”

“We selected the Phillip Jeffries Flight wallpaper for its moody green, dark ocean vibe; a contrast to the brick floors and digital artwork around the property. The wallpaper, reflected in the mirror ceiling provides a point of interest and statement backdrop to prepare and calm the guest for the lift journey to the rooms.”

Bergman & Co

The Melburnian

by Bergman & Co

Housed in a two-storey Victorian building in the heart of Abbotsford, La Fantaisie artfully combines florist, café and function spaces into a welcoming and tactile proposition.

Embracing a layered approach to materials, the venue reflects the beauty and fragility of the historic site. Burnished concrete floors, exposed-truss ceilings, raked render and troweled brick walls create a textural backdrop, drawing focus to the striking articulation of floristry and café benches.

Interested in softening the industrial character of the warehouse building, Bergman & Co. introduced Camengo Fjord Chameau curtains from The Textile Company into the heart of the space. This linen-like voile subtly delineates the venue’s floristry and café spaces, lending privacy between settings. The softness of the fabric’s texture offers a subtle sense of movement, while its earthy tone harmonises with the blush veins of the nearby marble counters.

“The brief outlined from the client was to create an interior of a high standard that matched the iconic location and matched views that provided a backdrop for the interior. Using the Phillip Jeffries Silk and Abaca paper throughout the living areas delivered and exceeded this aim assisted highlighting the height throughout these areas, the addition of a luxe and subtle texture paired with a sophisticated colour proved to be a great addition for this interior.

For the bedrooms, Phillip Jeffries Seaside Linen was our specified wallcovering. Here we intended to provide subtle character and texture to the walls to assist in creating a soft and calming interior for the bedrooms and which didn’t compete with the views across Macquarie Street into the botanical gardens where the abundance of natural everchanging foliage was the focus of colour for these interior spaces”

Kennedy Nolan

The Melburnian

by Kennedy Nolan

When brought on board to renovate a three-level house by the late Melbourne modernist Theodore Berman – famed for a back catalogue of era-defining bowling alleys and motor inns – Kennedy Nolan architects confronted a curious contradiction of mid-century style (typically premised on frugality) and a “patrician” planning that accounted for servants.

Evincing the modernist’s penchant for pink stone and warm walnut timber, the upper-level master suite pays a restrained homage to the original wall-to-wall palette with Phillip Jeffries Abaca Harvest delicately embracing the joinery in its Terracotta glory.

“The mission for my space was to show people that there is more colours in existence than “greige”.  The space was about colour, details & individuality & I think I got my point across

I used Misia Aime on both the sofas & chairs & some Portofino on the cushions and very happy with how it turned out!”
