Brownlow Interior Design

by Brownlow Interior Design

“Crafted by acclaimed Melbourne Architect Wayne Gillespie, this town house nestled in Armadale’s verdant embrace showcases Gillespie’s hallmark: spacious layouts and strategic illumination with natural light.

Rather than altering the structural integrity, our task was to infuse the interiors with a feminine allure and an unrestrained embrace of patterns and hues for our discerning client. Drawing inspiration from the whimsical Clarence House print, Congo, featuring playful animals frolicking on plump cushions, our initial design scheme took flight. Vibrant greens and pinks were introduced to synchronise with the lush landscapes by Paul Bangay, granting each room sweeping vistas both to the north and south.

Throughout, we’ve seamlessly integrated cherished artworks and timeless antiques, revitalising each space with relaxed slipcovers and sumptuous upholstery in exquisite textiles. A delightful botanical wallpaper enlivens a petite powder room, while the snug, ensconced in coral pink raffia wallpaper, beckons as a cosy haven on chilly winter nights.”

“Armytage House, a historic mansion built in 1860, has been meticulously restored to its former grandeur. Originally serving as a boarding school and council chambers, the home has been reimagined to blend its rich history with modern family living.

A key aspect of the renovation was to honour the home’s historical significance while creating functional and beautiful spaces for contemporary use. Phillip Jeffries wallpaper was used throughout to add texture, tone, and intimacy, providing an ideal backdrop that highlights the integrity of the original architectural features and complements the new layers of soft furnishings, lighting and art.”

Kennedy Nolan

by Kennedy Nolan

This apartment interior can be found in one of the most celebrated apartment buildings in Melbourne, Fairlie, by the venerable modernists Yuncken Freeman Bothers, Griffiths and Simpson. The brief was for a down-size apartment for a client transitioning from a large house and garden which came with a lifetime of carefully and intelligently collected art and furniture. Our first move was spatial, a desire to break down the cellular plan and introduce enfilades which would reveal the triple aspect of the floor-plate but also acknowledge the way an apartment can be inhabited as a variegated progression through a continuous space.

Materiality, texture, surface and colour draw on the tertiary hues of late modernism and the luxurious intensity of a design movement at its hedonistic, grasscloth is at once contemporary and nostalgic. Each roll is completely unique, exquisitely and subtly textured from a distance and ingeniously intricate up-close. The custom coloured wallpaper in the snug speaks to the modernist palette and creates a bold backdrop for the clients collected pieces.

“Designed to have a feminine feel to the space, we wanted this bedroom to reflect the client’s personality through their love of soft nude/pink tones.

The Phillip Jeffries Gilded Age Rockefeller wallpaper in Rose perfectly suited the Kelly Wearstler bed frame as well as the custom rug in the space, tying the soft and hard finishes in together to create a tonal palette in the bedroom.”
